Malcolm holds his nerve to win the 2007 Match Play Title

Apart from the odd top 5 finish both Malcolm and Leo were keen to finish the season with a major piece of silverware and their name etched into the ACGA history books. Both were out of contention in the Order of Merit and with Captains Day the only remaining event, winning the Matchplay Competition was the best chance of success in 2007.

After coming through the grueling qualification process Leo seeded 8th and Malcolm seeded 10^th faced some tough opponents en route to the final. It was Leo who seemed to adapt better to this format overcoming David Francis and last years winner Greg Worrel by a convincing score of 3&2. In the long awaited semi-final encounter with Winston Johnson Leo won 5&3. Malcolm started well with a 5&3 victory over Henry Laville followed buy a 2&1 triumph over Russell Joseph. His toughest test was against Leon Brown this went all the way to the 18^th with Malcolm winning 1 up.

The final was played on Wednesday 26^th September at Ashridge Golf club in Berkhamsted, The course idyllic, the conditions perfect and both players focused on the task ahead. With just four shots to play with first blood went to Leo with a text book par on the first hole. The remainder of match was a very evenly contested affair with no player going up more than 2 holes. Teeing off on the last hole the scores were level. The odds were marginally in favor of Leo as this was a shot hole for him. However it was Malcolm that defied the odds and rolled in his 4^th birdie of the round to win the hole and the match 1Up.

Our congratulations go out to Malcolm as winner of the ACGA 2007 Matchplay Competition. Commiserations to Leo a very worthy finalist who I am sure will be back on top of the podium again very soon. Special thanks also to all the players who gave their support by entering the competition and making it a success.
