Titans v ACGA |
|
After 2 long years of ‘pain’ and the humiliating defeat of the inaugural Brislon Trophy back in 2007. Revenge was sweet in this Bi-annual match between Titans (Bristol) and ACGA (London) As the ACGA chipped up on first day with their chest pushed out and one player short! There was a strong rumour that some of the other ‘big shots’ were frightened to lose and made some very feeble excuse for not attending. They even turned up without the trophy. ACGA did not get off to a very good start, notably one of their players was spotted practising on 18th green prior to the match! In the rules of golf that’s a disqualification. Titan’s decided not to penalise him subject to performances! They sent their top man out alone Malcolm O’G in 1st pairing and he was severely beaten up by Norman and Fez, dog license come to mind!! Overall the other 3 pairings proved to be a fiercely contested match ACGA captain Henry and Greg Worrell suffered a 7 and 6 defeat at the hands of Mr consistent Brian Levy and Ian Wilkie, a new name that ACGA will get to know very soon!!! The 1st day was an embarrassing experience for the 2 captains as they both sat on the losers table for dinner in the club house at The Park although the match score was a very fair all square 2 points each going into day 2!
Day 2 at Euro-pro course, The Players, with the sun shining, discussions took place whether to penalise ACGA for being a man short and chipping up just in time to get on 1St T and getting lost, but after deliberation Titans Captain, Tennis ‘I have a dream’ Russell decided that in the spirit of the game he would wait to see if it was ‘needed later’!
There were some very close matches apart from the Titans Captain TR who demolished Leon Brown 5 and 3 and Andy Mac (Return of the Mac) giving Malcolm O’G a golf lesson how to finish.
ACGA Captain, from being 4 down and 6 to play, decided he did not want to sit on the losers table again, finished with ½ point!!!! The day finished Titans 4 ½ to ACGA 2 ½ . Notable strong performance in both camps were Steve Garner of ACGA and Ian Wilkie of Titans, who both finished the weekend unbeaten with 2 wins each and some solid golf for their respective team.
In the pairings an incredible performance- which took place in rain, sleet, snow, howling wind and even a bit of sun, a very dodgy day- by one bandeleero with sombrero and shiny spurs, 12 handicapper, called Mr Cornelius Joseph who finished Gross Level Par – Yes Gross!- sinking an eagle on the 18th to record one of the, not so many, points won by ACGA. This man must surly be penalised, under observation rule 19, and now play off 5 or 6???
The match finished Titans 6 ½ to ACGA 4 ½ making Titans the Ryder Cup BRISLON TROPHY winners 2009. Well played all those that took part in the event. Surely, one of the most enjoyable and best events on the ACGA/Titans golfing fixtures. I’m sure ACGA will not take this defeat lightly but Titans will certainly not let them forget it for 2 very, very long years!!! Please return trophy to its rightful place in spotless condition!!
