"Tennis" Game, Set
and Match
Donnington Grove
Country Club
Friday 8th
August 2008
Our 5th major takes
us down the M4
corridor to a new
venue for the ACGA.
Donnington Grove
country club is
where we will find
out who has the
complete game to
take on the 27 holes
that lay in waiting.
On arrival we are
welcomed into the
brand new club house
and pro shop.
For the morning 9
holes if you were
looking to ease
yourself into the
round then you had
better think again.
We are off the 10th
tee, 567 yards par
5, stroke index 1.
Some light rain to
make the green a
little more
receptive but
nothing to worry
Tennis Russell (19)
Ray Maginley (20)
Damian Queva (20) In
my group and
swinging the club
very nicely Steve
Garner (20) but
leading the way and
two points clear in
the morning, our boy
from Bristol Brian
Levy (22)
A quick refuel and
back out for the two
tee start, afternoon
round. The front 9
holes we are told
will play different
from the back 9.
Twelve players are
within five shots of
the leader, but as
the scores start to
come in it's those
familiar names that
are making their way
up the leader board.
In fifth place with
a sold (33) is Roger
Goddard. Cut him 3
shorts, but he
refuses to lie down
Stuart Austrie
fourth place. Again
in the top five and
one better than his
last major Ray
Maginley in third
place.
The top two
obviously like the
air down this way
and for a while had
a real battle going
on. Our morning
leader Brian Levy
held it together and
came in with a well
played (31) points
but it was not to be
his day, second
place.
Our winner had been
confident that his
game was in good
shape and that he
would be ready come
Friday. So pleased
with the way he had
been striking the
ball on Monday,
Tuesday, Wednesday
and Thursday that he
sent the Captain a
e-mail informing him
that he was so sure
that he would pick
up his first major
that he was in the
process of writing
is winning speech (click
here to read speech).
The captain returned
the mail reminding
him that this was
not the Titans major
day but the real
deal.
Well the attendees
at Donnington Grove
can vouch that,
“so said so done”
He had his winning
speech printed and
ready to go and boy
did he let us have
it, both barrels.
He went on and on
and on.........and
on. (19) Points in
the morning no let
up in the afternoon
(19) points on the
front 9 and (20)
coming home gave him
the absolute right
to take as long as
he wanted.
It gives great
pleasure to say our
Donnington Grove
Country Club 5th
major winner and 3rd
first time winner
for 2008 is
Tennis "Titans"
