Raf Rules at Westerham!
The ACGA rolled into Westerham Golf Club for Major 5 of the 2026 season, with 42 players ready to do battle as the Race to the Championship moved firmly into its second half. Westerham is never a course that simply hands over its points, so there was plenty to play for as another strong ACGA field took to the fairways. By the end of the day, however, one man had risen above the rest.
Raf Roberts, take a bow.
Raf produced the performance of the day to claim 1st place and another coveted ACGA Major title, seeing off a strong challenge from Steve Lee-Sang, who finished an excellent 2nd. In 3rd place was Mike “Woody” Woodstock, adding another strong finish to his ACGA résumé, while Trevor Lammy completed the leading quartet in 4th. With five Majors now played, every result is beginning to matter just that little bit more. The opportunities to collect valuable points are disappearing, and the Race to the Championship is entering the stage where contenders become very interested in exactly what everyone else has scored!
Our Guests Join the Fun
We were delighted to welcome five guests to Westerham:
Danovan Reid, Mark James, Cecil Willer, Garth Kinlocke and Congratulations to Kab Addai, who walked away with the Best Guest honours on the day.
A special mention must also go to Cecil Willer, making his very first appearance with the ACGA and wasting absolutely no time getting himself onto the prize list. Cecil claimed Nearest the Pin, which isn’t a bad way to introduce yourself to the Association. No settling-in period required, apparently!
We hope all five guests enjoyed the day and look forward to welcoming them back to another ACGA event soon.
Captain Goes for Glory
There was also a memorable moment from Captain Randy Plowright, who claimed Nearest the Pin in Two, although that doesn’t quite tell the whole story. Randy decided that the conventional method of reaching the green in two was far too straightforward, so instead he drove the 7th green and left himself a very makeable six-foot putt for eagle. The hard part was done. Six feet stood between the Captain and golfing glory. The eagle putt rolled towards the cup, Captain walking it in …..as the ball lipped out and finished two inches away. Nearest the Pin in Two secured, eagle emphatically not secured! We’re sure the membership will concentrate entirely on the magnificent drive and barely mention the missed six-footer at all. Congratulations, Captain. 🎯
The Blob-o-meter Does Its Thing
Of course, while Raf and company were collecting the glory at one end of the leaderboard, elsewhere on the course the Blob-o-meter was quietly gathering evidence. By the time our resident Blob Master Steve Garner had finished his usual combination of calculations, negotiations, public humiliation and entirely legitimate fundraising techniques, another £250 had been raised for charity. Once again, the membership dug deep, although admittedly some had considerably more encouragement from their scorecards than others! Every blob has a silver lining at the ACGA, and the money raised continues to demonstrate how a bit of fun surrounding our golfing misfortunes can contribute to something genuinely worthwhile.
Five Down, The Race Is On
Another Major completed, another chapter written in the 2026 season. qCongratulations to Trevor Lammy in 4th, Woody in 3rd, Steve Lee-Sang in 2nd and, most importantly, our Westerham champion Raf Roberts. With five Majors now in the books, we’re moving towards the serious end of the season. There are fewer opportunities remaining, the points are becoming increasingly valuable, and those with ambitions of finishing the year at the top know there is very little room left for an off day. Next up, we’re heading to Tudor Park for the eagerly anticipated ACGA Weekender on 5th and 6th September.
Two days of golf, an overnight stay and the ACGA membership all in one place. What could possibly go wrong? For now, though, Westerham belongs to one man.
