Protain is good for you….
Westerham Golf Club played host to another brilliant day out for the ACGA faithful on Friday 2nd August – and while the views were lush and the greens slick, it was Selwyn Protain who made it all look easy, posting a mighty 43 points to stroll home with the win. Yes, folks – Protain is indeed good for you. Calm, composed, and quietly clinical, Selwyn put together a masterclass in how to keep the card clean and the Stableford points flowing. The man’s been simmering for a while… now he’s properly cooked. Hot on his heels was Phil Nugent with a classy 41 points, followed by Frank Baptiste who continued his consistent run with 40. Edwin Walrond wasn’t far off either, sneaking into 4th with 39 – all proof that the top table is starting to look very competitive indeed.
The midfield was as congested as a North Circular on a Friday night. Five players shared 37 points – Trevor Edwards, Raf Roberts, Denise Regis, Hervin O’Connor, and the ever-smooth Ossie Roberts (who actually tied 5th with Randy Plowright on 38). That’s a lot of names in the mix, and plenty of bragging rights to go around the 19th hole.
But no write-up would be complete without a few of the more “colourful” performances…
Step forward Junior Grant, who decided that one moment of pure golfing magic was worth the trip alone. Standing 140 yards out on the par 5 16th, he pulled wedge and promptly holed out for eagle. Cold. Clinical. Crowd pleasing. And this, mind you, fresh off his win last month. The man’s clearly in the groove.
At the other end of the spectrum, we welcome Olympian Donovan Reid to ACGA. Now, Donovan knows a thing or two about speed (1984 Olympics, no less), but golf? Let’s just say his round was over quicker than his 100m dash… 4 points all day. Still, elite mentality and great vibes all round – he’s welcome anytime.
Shoutout also to the guest contingent, with 5 guests in total gracing the fairways. Freddie Bobb and Lynval Hamilton made long-awaited returns, both now regulars at The Shire but clearly missing the ACGA banter. Jessica Sandy continues her fine run of form – she’s practically one of us now. Trevor James turned up and held his own. And finally, Damion Queva walked off with the guest prize on the day – for the second month running. Some serious consistency there… is it time we checked his handicap?
All in all – another top day for the society. Protain proved there’s still juice in the tank. The leaderboard is tighter than ever. And with the quality (and the banter) both running high, it’s shaping up to be a spicy end to the season.
