Double Trouble!!!

Is it buses or taxi’s that you wait ages for and then two come along in short succession? it seems that not not content with just one season’s Major win, Stuart “anyone need a cab” Austrie helped himself to another one at Wild and windy Wokefield Park in September’s eagerly anticipated Weekender Major No 6. This event takes place over two days, with the first day also incorporating the 2025 Champion of Champions Trophy for all those who are eligible. The course at Wokefield was not playing at it’s best to be fair. A long, dry summer played havoc with the fairways and greens, which added to the windy conditions, presented very challenging conditions for all concerned.

Day one finished with Colin Parson and Stuart Austrie prevailing and taking the bragging rights into the evening’s dinner and entertainment. As usual good food and plentiful wine was served, which added to the plentiful banter and merriment. The meal was followed by a group reminiscing session, where the merits of good old school African Caribbean parenting were hilariously discussed, followed by all lamenting the loss of the many clubs from yesteryear. There were more than a few misty eyes when All Nations, Night Moves, Oasis, Trendz and a few others were mentioned…

The golf on day two followed a very similar pattern to day one. Challenging course and windy conditions. Steady progress was made by several players at various times, only to be undone by one or two holes and ruining what were looking like very competitive scores. Ultimately Colin (3rd) and Stuart featured heavily in the the final result shakeup. They were joined in the top 4 by Frank Skinner (4th) and Richard Payne (2nd), with Richard scoring a noteworthy 39 points on the day. Ultimately, Stuart overhauled Colin and the rest of the field to record his 2nd Major win of the season. Congratulations Stuart!

The keynote speech and winners’ trophies on the day were presented by Candace Oxley, the daughter of the Late Daryl Oxley, one of the original members of the ACGA. Candace spoke of her pride in seeing what her father helped create, and gratitude that the ACGA flag is still flying and seemingly going from strength to strength.

Onwards we go to season ending Captain’s Day at Brookman’s Park in October
