Dark Lord Delivers
As has been the case over the last few years, the season’s Champion of Champions event was held during the September ACGA weekender. Day one on the Saturday is a combined strokeplay and stapleford competition, with the former being the Champion of Champion (CoC) Comp. The competition is open to all previous Major, Singles or Order of Merit winners and is always eagerly anticipated, as ever player knows they are just one shot away from disaster. Wokefield Park presented a particular challenge on the day, as the weather was windy and the course was still suffering from the very dry summer. This meant the fairways and greens could subject your ball to unpredictable bounces and changes of direction, which made scoring particularly difficult. One player however, managed to master the conditions and keep his ball (and his game) under reasonable control. Step forward Colin Parson, the Dark Lord. This was definitely a day when experience and cool heads won over youth, distance and excitement. Stuart Austrie, another consistency over unpredictability specialist came home in second place. Steve Garner managed to reign in his game to finish a creditable third. The winner’s trophy was presented on the Sunday, and in a surprise for all members, it was presented by the daughter of the Late, Great Daryl Oxley, a founder member who graced the ACGA with his skills before sadly passing away in 2007. Candace did her dad proud, by delivering a thank you speech to close out the day.
